So for this reason I never use emulator tools when playing non-kaizo hacks. I also find that using emulator tools such as savestates removes a lot the challenges that I enjoy and also removes any incentive to play well and avoid death at all costs, and basically makes playing through levels pointless. I get bored if I am playing through levels without dying at all. I definitely play hacks for the challenge more than anything else so I prefer playing hard levels over easy levels.

So, smw hacks are a very appealing source of challenges for me. I really like the smw engine and Mario's movements, they seem very natural and intuitive to me and I always feel like I have really good control over Mario. I guess that's to be expected though 8-year-old brains don't work the same way as 19-year-old brains.įirst off, I've played a lot of Super Mario World.

It's also worth mentioning that my standards change as I get older and better at games, like I used to be completely incompetent at the Valley Fortress, but now it's just at the high end of my challenging-but-fun spectrum. Rolling up a big ball of flowers is great after a long work week, but it doesn't fulfill the same needs as beating the tar out of some big parasitic alien that's going to destroy the world. I also still enjoy easy games, sometimes more than more difficult stuff, but I like those more as stress relief than as like.something to do, for lack of a better word. Late-game SMW and mid-to-late-game in later Castlevanias are pretty good examples in platformers. I don't really think it's "too hard" until the Special world (with the exception of Lemmy and Wendy's castles, though those aren't so much hard as they are tedious and annoying), and even then, the only level I have a serious problem with is Tubular.so yeah, I like a level of difficulty that's reasonably challenging but doesn't make me start yelling at the screen something that takes a few tries and gets me just angry enough to feel accomplished when I finally beat the damn level, and not something that I have to sit and work on for hours, because that just sucks the fun out of everything. I dunno how I'd feel about it if I hadn't grown up with it, though I'm sure I'd still enjoy it it's a very well-made game. I grew up with Mario, so for me, at least part of the reason I play is familiarity.
